 STIM/TENS Therapy

EMS/e-stim is used as a physical therapy & fitness technique is a machine that works by transmitting electrical impulses through electrodes that are applied directly to your skin.

The electrodes can be applied directly to key muscle groups where electrical signals will then trigger contractions of the muscle for a variation of times dependant on the desired outcome. The process isn’t too different from the voluntary muscle contractions associated with strength training, by using e-stim/EMS to help build strength both pre & post surgery on the knee for example helps aids recovery, but can be used on many other areas too.

If you train regularly or play sport you may find you have a ‘weakness’ in a certain area or find it hard to ‘fire’ a particular muscle group, particularly if you are dominant on one side of the body like with golf or tennis. Then e-stim can be great to help re-educate or ‘recruit’ those areas again, if it is used in conjunction with some strength work & rehab it can make all the difference to your progress.

When using e-stim as part of a recovery routine, the machine sends signals to targeted muscles to make them contact, by causing repeated muscles contractions it helps to improve the blood flow and aids repair in the injured muscle.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)

A TENS unit is a battery-operated device that some people use to treat pain, these units work by delivering small electrical impulses through electrodes that have adhesive pads to attach them to a person’s skin.

These electrical impulses flood the nervous system, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain, the same electrical impulses also stimulate the body to produce natural pain relievers called endorphins.

TENS units may help treat the following symptoms:

  • postoperative pain

  • joint pain

  • neck and back pain

They may also alleviate pain that results from the following conditions:
